It is the middle of the summer, but yet we are gearing up for the new school year already. I have the school supply lists in my purse, and I am searching online for the best sales on school uniforms. This is expensive in itself, but there is one cost we bear without thinking, extracurricular activities. When I was a child, there were those kids that were involved in dance and piano lessons, not me. I was a country kid running out in the woods with my friends and cousins. I feel that now we are obsessed with the level of activities our children participate in. Is it for them? Is it for us? Is it a Jone's thing?
Once my kids reached the age to join, we did. I have a cheerleader, 2 soccer players, show choir singer, tried dance, attempted science summer camp- that failed. With 3 kids, it is a lot to keep up with. I have signed and paid for these activities because I thought, hey- they can make friends, it will help build character, and they will have insane skills. This will help us procure a scholarship. We can do this. Really?
My top priority should be that they have fun. My kids are so smart and of course so perfect. But the expectation that they would be an instant pro is insane. I have filled my schedule and theirs. I have introduced pressure into their lives. Have I overstepped? Have I become that mother? Borderline crazy? Am I living through them? Nah. I really have good intentions, but what I have learned is that I was doing it because I wanted them to fit in more and be part of a group. I have changed my ways. I have learned to ask my kids if they want to do this. They have a say. I do not want them to learn to quit in the middle of a season, so if they are hesitant to start, then we revisit and make that choice. We do not start something we are not going to finish. It is unfair to those on your team. This they can learn.
It is senseless to spend a ton of money to force your child to participate in something you think they should love, to get that metal or trophy that everyone gets and expects, get those pictures to put up in your office. I have those, so I am not judging. I want my kids to have that for memories, but only by their choice. I still have three kids that are highly involved, costing a ton, but they are happy and love it. It is always better to spend money and know it is worth it. I would go broke for that moment.
